What is a fragrance?
It is a mixture of several ingredients, some of natural origin, such as essential oils and other of synthetic origin.
- There are more than 2,000 materials.
- There may be between 60 and 250 ingredients in each formulation, the concentration may be as low as 0.0001%.
- Raw materials come from around the world.
- Fragrances are made in accordance with standards of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).
- Test Strips Blotter are used to smell fragrances.
The creation of fragrances is an excellent example of nature and science working together. Several raw materials are natural (flowers, herbs, spices, citrus fruits, roots, seeds). The desired compound is isolated from the plant by a combination of mechanical processes, distillation, extraction and evaporation. Those ingredients are enhanced by synthesized materials that can reproduce natural elements that can not be obtained in large quantities or which have unique properties.
Natural or artificial ingredients?
Over time, it was discovered that many disadvantages could be associated with the use of natural products, such as the variability of quality depending of the producing area, higher and higher prices, unstable supply and possibility, in some cases, of allergenic ingredients. As knowledge of ingredients is increasing with research, we remark that the « natural » is less and less used in the creation of high quality product.
The safety of an ingredient does not depend on if it is synthetic or natural.
Nearly half of the natural ingredients that can be found in a fragrance can cause skin irritation. Research from IFRA (International Fragrance Association) and RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) continue each year to ensure the safety of those essential oils and all ingredients used in perfumery.
